what this Event is about
The increased use of telemetry in both specialist units and general ward settings has heightened the responsibility of nurses to ensure their knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias and ECG interpretation is current and aligned with best practice guidelines. The content covered in this seminar is considered essential knowledge and clinical competence for any nurse working in ward telemetry, coronary care, critical care, or emergency nursing.
It is also highly valuable for nurses and midwives in other clinical areas who wish to enhance their understanding of arrhythmia interpretation. A solid grasp of electrophysiology and the three key measurement parameters will enable nurses to effectively recognise deviations from normal cardiac rhythms.
Additionally, we will examine a potentially life-threatening cardiac condition that predominantly affects young women, especially those who are pregnant, have recently given birth, or are in the postpartum period. Recognising arrhythmias in this population is critical for midwives and emergency nurses, due to the condition’s unique presentation, the significant risks it poses to both mother and baby, and the urgent need for timely intervention. Notably, cardiac deterioration remains the leading cause of maternal death in pregnancy.
On Day Two of this conference, we will explore the importance of advanced respiratory assessment and the essential skills required by registered nurses and paramedics. The session will cover the general assessment of deteriorating patients experiencing respiratory compromise and delve into a range of uncommon but often life-threatening respiratory disorders.
Anne will also explain chest auscultation, interpretation of chest x-rays and arterial blood gases (ABG) in an easy-to-follow format with clinical hints and scenarios.
“Simply Awesome an outstanding presenter who gave her all. An excellent teacher who could reach those at a basic level as well as
advanced practitioners. Fantastic value for money”
– Diane, The Deteriorating Patient, Cruising New Zealand 2019
Learning Outcomes
At this event, you will:
-
- Identify the three essential parameters (values) that assist with the analysis of a rhythm strip and the interpretation of a 12 lead ECG
- Discuss the general respiratory assessment of a deteriorating patient and explore the clinical presentation relating to respiratory compromise
- Investigate interpretation of blood gases and critically evaluation the abnormal parameters
- Discuss how to evaluate lung sounds and link the abnormal sounds to the presentation on the chest x-ray
You will Also learn:
- The cardiac complex: waves, segments, and timing intervals and the foundation of interpretation of sinus rhythm
- The presentation and pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation (AF)
- Interpretation of PEA (Pulseless electrical activity) and VT (Ventricular tachycardia)
- The treatment of PEA and VT according to the Australian and New Zealand Committee of Resuscitation guidelines (ANZCOR)
- The warning signs of impending cardiac arrest on the telemetry monitor
- Sudden cardiac death in the youth
- Examining the Long QT interval syndrome and link to medication and electrolyte imbalances
- How a patient with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) presents and the gender issues on presentation
- The common errors that are made in performing a 12-lead ECG
- How to recognise a patient deteriorating with a respiratory disorder or condition
- Interesting respiratory conditions such as silicosis, psittacosis and legionnaires disease, COVID 19, and the deadly emerging C.auris
- Identifying deterioration of a patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- The link between patients with COPD developing right heart failure
- The anatomy of the lung fields, examining the lobes and landmarks for auscultation
- The significance of a post-operative patient who develops crackles and shortness of breath
- The assessment of a patient who is developing life-threatening anaphylaxis The three common tachycardias seen on telemetry:
- Sinus tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia

WHAT OUR ATTENDEES HAD TO SAY
This course should be taught in Uni’s and hospitals everywhere. I finally get it. I have watched videos, read books, followed presentations on YouTube and gained some knowledge but this course just made it all click.

Lysandra
The course was easy to follow due to the presenter's clear passion for her subject. It was paced perfectly and every aspect was interesting and relevant. It has given me more confidence to begin to properly analyse why we are monitoring our patients and given me a good foundation to begin interpreting the rhythms.

Chrissie
Anne Murray-Evans presented the topics in a simple yet insightful manner. I have gained more confidence in reading ECGs and in being able to explain them to patients and colleagues.

Annabelle
Fantastic and informative seminar with relevant information for all who attend! The speaker Anne Evan- Murray she was fabulous, not to mention Sue who did an amazing job organising.
