what this Event is about
Expert nurses play a vital role in recognising the early signs of clinical deterioration, particularly in patients experiencing cardiac or respiratory compromise. This highly regarded seminar equips participants with essential clinical skills to identify and manage cardiac and respiratory deterioration, with a strong focus on practical application across a variety of healthcare settings.
Designed for emergency nurses, ward nurses, critical care nurses, midwives, and clinicians working in all areas of nursing, this seminar is particularly relevant in today’s healthcare environment, where telemetry is increasingly utilised not only in specialised units but also on general wards. With this expansion comes a growing responsibility for nurses to ensure their knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias and recognition of ST elevation and ST depression on the 12 lead ECG.
A sound understanding of electrophysiology, along with the five key ECG measurements that underpin accurate arrhythmia interpretation, is essential for recognising abnormal cardiac rhythms promptly and effectively. This knowledge forms the foundation of safe and timely patient care.
Day Two of the seminar shifts focus to advanced respiratory assessment and the critical clinical skills required by nurses. Participants will learn to assess and manage patients with respiratory compromise, including those presenting with uncommon but potentially life-threatening respiratory conditions.
Respiratory disorders are on the rise globally, driven by factors such as chronic disease, environmental exposures, and emerging infections. As a result, nurses are increasingly encountering complex respiratory presentations across all clinical settings. Enhancing respiratory assessment skills is essential—not only for early recognition of deterioration but also for initiating appropriate interventions that can significantly improve patient outcomes.
The session includes clear, practical instruction on chest auscultation and arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation, supported by clinical tips and real-world scenarios to build confidence and enhance clinical decision-making in practice.
“Simply awesome, an outstanding presenter who gave her all. An excellent teacher who could reach those at a basic level as well as advanced practitioners. Fantastic value for money”
– Diane, The Deteriorating Patient
Learning Outcomes
At this event, you will:
-
- Identify the three essential parameters (values) that assist with the analysis of a rhythm strip and the interpretation of a 12 lead ECG
- Learn how to expertly assess a patient to determine if they have had a syncope or a cardiac arrest
- Examine the Long QT interval syndrome and link this to sudden cardiac death in youth and the link to antidepressants and other medication
- Discuss the general respiratory assessment of a deteriorating patient and explore the clinical presentation relating to respiratory compromise
- Investigate the interpretation of blood gases and critically evaluation the abnormal parameters
You will Also learn:
- The cardiac complex: waves, segments, and timing intervals and the foundation of interpretation of sinus rhythm
- The presentation and pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation
- Interpretation of PEA (Pulseless electrical activity) and VT (Ventricular tachycardia)
- The treatment of PEA and VT according to the Australian and New Zealand Committee of Resuscitation guidelines (ANZCOR)
- The warning signs of impending cardiac arrest on the telemetry monitor
- Sudden cardiac death in the youth
- The common errors that are made in performing a 12-lead ECG
- How to recognise a patient deteriorating with a respiratory disorder or condition
- To recognise interesting respiratory conditions such as silicosis, psittacosis and legionnaires disease, COVID 19, and the deadly emerging C.auris
- Identifying deterioration of a patient with COPD
- The link between patients with COPD developing right heart failure
- The anatomy of the lung fields, examining the lobes and landmarks for auscultation
- The significance of a post- operative patient who develops crackles and shortness of breath
- The assessment of a patient who is developing life-threatening anaphylaxis
