Cardiac ECG Interpretation & TELEMETRY

what this Event is about

Cardiac rhythm changes don’t wait for the “right” ward — and neither can our response.

As telemetry expands beyond specialist cardiac units into general wards, the responsibility on nurses and midwives to recognise, interpret and act on rhythm changes has never been greater. Whether you work in acute care, maternity, postnatal services or a non-cardiac specialty, clinically significant rhythm abnormalities can and do occur in every setting.

This event strengthens the foundations that underpin safe cardiac monitoring. By unpacking the essentials of electrophysiology and the three core measurement parameters, participants will build the confidence to recognise what’s normal, identify early warning signs, and respond appropriately when something isn’t right.

More than theory, this session connects rhythm interpretation to real-world practice — supporting timely clinical decisions, improved patient safety, and stronger interdisciplinary communication across telemetry and maternity environments.

Because recognising a rhythm change early can make all the difference.

“The fear and uncertainty of reading ECGs and telemetry is something I don’t need to feel anymore, now I have the confidence to apply Anne’s Famous 5 step process to interpret heart rhythms. If you feel anxious when faced with an ECG or telemetry monitor then this course will change all that!” – Jodie, Telemetry and ECG Interpretation, The Gold Coast 2023

Learning Outcomes

In this seminar, you will:

    • Identify the three essential parameters (values) that assist with the analysis of a rhythm strip
    • Demonstrate how to work out these parameters: PR interval, QRS width, and QT interval
    • How to interpret a 12-lead ECG
    • Explore the additional clinical scenarios of a drug overdose and post-myocardial infarction and what the Nurse would observe on a rhythm strip of that patient

You will learn:

  • The cardiac complex: waves, segments, and timing intervals
  • The foundation of interpretation of sinus rhythm
  • The pathophysiology and life-threatening complications of atrial fibrillation
  • Cardiac Safety in Maternity Care
  • Two potentially life-threatening complications of atrial fibrillation
  • Interpretation of PEA (Pulseless electrical activity) and VT (Ventricular tachycardia)
  • The treatment of PEA and VT according to the Australian and New Zealand Committee of Resuscitation guidelines (ANZCOR)
  • The importance of assertive communication in getting the best outcome for your patient
  • The warning signs of impending cardiac arrest on the telemetry monitor
  • The R-on-T phenomenon
  • Sudden cardiac death in the youth
  • Hereditary Long QT interval syndrome
  • How a patient with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) presents and the gender issues on presentation
  • The common errors made in performing a 12-lead ECG
  • The difference between angina, anterior and inferior MI on the 12-lead ECG
  • Wellen’s syndrome
  • SCAD – Spontaneous coronary artery dissection
  • The presentation of Takotsubo syndrome
  • The recognition of a paced rhythm
  • The three common tachycardias seen on telemetry:
    • Sinus tachycardia
    • Supraventricular tachycardia
    • Ventricular tachycardia

WHAT OUR ATTENDEES HAD TO SAY

This course should be taught in Uni’s and hospitals everywhere. I finally get it. I have watched videos, read books, followed presentations on YouTube and gained some knowledge but this course just made it all click.

Testimonial Item

Lysandra

The course was easy to follow due to the presenter's clear passion for her subject. It was paced perfectly and every aspect was interesting and relevant. It has given me more confidence to begin to properly analyse why we are monitoring our patients and given me a good foundation to begin interpreting the rhythms.
