Join us and our Conference Partners, Education at Sea, for the Respiratory Patient Conference aboard the Norwegian Bliss as we explore Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan, and Victoria leaving from Seattle.

Discover the natural wonders of Alaska, the beauty of Victora Canada, and all that the fabulous city of Seattle has to offer.

This conference will present an overview of common acute respiratory complications and airway problems, looking at respiratory assessment and management across the age continuum. The role of the nurse/ paramedic in respiratory disease and airway management will be discussed from diagnosis to management.

This information provided in this course will be applicable to all areas of nursing and paramedics, from the acute setting in the emergency department to the medical or surgical ward nurse managing a patient with unexpected respiratory symptoms. Nurses must have advanced knowledge of the signs and symptoms of respiratory deterioration.

Developing knowledge on how to recognise and perform advanced clinical assessment on a patient who is deteriorating is an expectation of the evolving role of the clinical nurse/ paramedic1. In this conference, we will explore the assessment of a patient with a variety of clinical disorders with an emphasis on respiratory function.

A case study approach will be used looking at many clinical scenarios that will assist the nurse/paramedic to recognise and respond to clinical deterioration by applying a critical thinking approach. The communication strategies to support patient assessment will be investigated. ‘Human factors’ and ‘situational awareness’ will be incorporated into the conference content in recognition that these skills are vital in ensuring effective communication within the healthcare team2.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explore the skills required to recognise and undertake clinical assessment of the patient with common acute respiratory complications and airway problems,
  • Review a variety of clinical conditions relating to common acute respiratory complications and airway problems,
  • Discuss common acute respiratory complications and airway problems, affecting children through to the older adult
  • Discover how to apply critical thinking via a scenario-based teaching approach. Gain advanced understanding of human factors and situational awareness to enhance effective communication, and timely intervention, within the healthcare team.
