What this study tour is About

This ten day study tour offers you a rare opportunity to step
outside your usual healthcare environment and experience
service delivery through a completely different cultural and
system lens. Combining structured education with immersive
site visits, participants will explore how services are provided in
the Chinese health system.

You will see how services are organised, how patients move
through the system, and how decisions are made when
demand is high.

You will also see how traditional and contemporary care sit
alongside each other and how that shapes what patients
expect and accept. It is something you really need to see to
understand.

There is time to ask questions, talk with local clinicians, and
get a better sense of how and why things are done the way
they are.

The accompanying six-hour conference series is designed to
make sense of what participants are seeing in real time.
Sessions focus on translating observations into clinical insight,
examining differences in professional roles, decision-making,
communication, and patient expectations. Rather than passive
learning, the program encourages critical reflection,
comparison with Australian standards, and identification of
practical strategies that can inform and strengthen nursing
practice back home.

This is not about adopting another system. It is about
understanding it, questioning our own, and returning with
sharper clinical awareness and broader professional
perspective.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Critically compare key differences between Australian healthcare systems and those observed in Chinese health
    care settings
  • Analyse how cultural beliefs and values influence patient expectations, treatment choices, and engagement with
    healthcare services
  • Identify the role and integration of traditional Chinese medicine within contemporary healthcare delivery and its
    implications for nursing practice
  • Translate international observations into practical insights that can inform clinical decision-making, communication,
and patient-centred care in the Australian context

CLINICAL lEAD:

Sue Walker Nurses for Nurses

Sue Walker

RN, BN, BN (ADMIN), MPHC, MACN, Specialist Nurse Educator

Sue is the Director and Co-Founder of Nurses for Nurses (NfN), delivering national and international conferences, study tours and professional development programs for nurses and midwives. She is also a key contributor to Nursing CPD, an online education platform supporting nurses to meet NMBA Continuing Professional Development requirements through accessible, evidence-based learning that is firmly grounded in real-world practice.

Sue holds degrees in Nursing and Health Administration, a Master of Primary Health, and postgraduate qualifications in areas including psychiatry of ageing, gerontology, chemotherapy administration and training and assessment. Her career has included frontline clinical roles, senior management and education leadership, giving her a practical, end-to-end understanding of how healthcare policy, workforce pressures and clinical realities collide at the point of care, in the community and across the system.

A sought-after presenter in Australia and internationally, Sue focuses on the issues nurses actually face at work — not just what looks good in policy documents. Her areas of interest include leadership without titles, public and population health, professional boundaries, workplace culture and incivility, bullying and moral distress, emergency management, aged care, mental health, advanced life support education, and the long-term psychological impact of caring work. She is particularly passionate about strengthening clinical judgement, professional confidence and practical strategies that protect both patient safety and workforce sustainability.

Sue is known for education that is evidence-based, unapologetically practical and grounded in the lived experience of nursing. Her programs move beyond surface-level wellbeing conversations to explore how organisational design, risk management and workforce policy shape daily practice and long-term career outcomes.

At the heart of her work is a simple belief: nurses and midwives are not just the backbone of healthcare — they are critical decision-makers whose knowledge, judgement and advocacy directly influence patient outcomes and system safety. Sue’s goal is to ensure nurses and midwives are supported and professionally empowered to meet the growing complexity of modern healthcare while sustaining long, fulfilling careers.

Program:

Delivered in two formats in the spirit of adult learning, the live presentations are delivered during the event, and the online library prior to the start date. The library is an essential component of the entire program.

The library consists of material supplied by the Presenters, which can include any of the following:

  • Research documents, links to external information and recorded presentations

The research documents and recorded presentations form part of the Continuing Professional Development activities. They are delivered to you before the commencement date so you can start your Conference Program early. If you choose not to undertake these activities prior, there is a two-week window post event where the library remains open to you. You can also undertake the library activities during the actual study tour.
