Angkor Wat has become the symbol of Cambodia and an absolute must-visit. It is one of the world’s largest religious monument.

Angkor Wat, in its beauty and state of preservation, is unrivalled. Its mightiness and magnificence bespeak a pomp and a luxury surpassing that of a Pharaoh or a Shah Jahan, an impressiveness greater than that of the Pyramids, an artistic distinctiveness as fine as that of the Taj Mahal. Angkor Wat is located about six kilometres (four miles) north of Siem Reap, south of Angkor Thom. Entry and exit to Angkor Wat can only be access from its west gate.

Angkor Wat was built in the first half of the 12th century (113-5BC). The estimated construction time of the temple is 30 years by King Suryavarman II, dedicated to Vishnu (Hindu), a replica of Angkor Thom style of art.

More than just a circus, Phare performers use theatre, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories; historical, folk and modern. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent.

Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak’s ( vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales.

Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.

The Killing Fields at Cheung Ek are an important memorial site for both Cambodians and visitors from around the world who want to honour those lost during a dark period in Cambodia’s history.
Afternoon: Explore at your leisure

Tuol Sleng Museum, also known as the Museum of Genocidal Crimes, was once used by the Khmer Rouge as a detention and torture centre in the late 1970s. The Killing Fields at Cheung Ek are an important memorial site for both Cambodians and visitors from around the world who want to honour those lost during a dark period in Cambodia’s history.

Your tour starts with pickup from your Phnom Penh hotel by your guide and driver for the ride to the Toul Sleng Museum (aka Prison S21).
During Cambodia’s Pol Pot regime, Toul Sleng, formerly a high school, was converted to a detention centre known as S21. After interrogation and often torture, prisoners were transferred to the ‘killing fields,’ where they were often tortured again and brutally killed. Today, the building is home to exhibits that display paintings and photographs of many of the victims. On your tour, you can see the crude cells built in the classrooms and the torture devices used to extract ‘confessions’ during the regime’s Stalin-esque purges in the late 1970s.

After the museum, continue your tour to the Killing Fields at Cheung Ek, located just outside the city centre. This site was a Chinese cemetery before it became the Khmer Rouge’s best-known killing field, where the remains of nearly 9,000 bodies have been excavated from mass graves in the area. A memorial stupa has been erected with a display of more than 5,000 human skulls, bones, and pieces of clothing from the victims. During the years of the Khmer Rouge, thousands of Cambodians were tortured and imprisoned in detention centres around the country; please note that this visit is a profoundly moving but also depressing experience.
Your tour ends with return to your hotel.
