Best time to see the lights

The best time to witness the Northern Lights in Norway is from late September through early April, when the nights are long, dark, and ideal for aurora viewing. Peak activity is typically between 18:00 and 02:00, with the most spectacular displays often appearing around midnight.

While the heart of winter delivers the darkest skies, many seasoned travellers favour March and the shoulder months of September and October. Around the equinoxes, geomagnetic activity tends to be stronger, increasing the chances of vivid auroral displays.

These months also often bring more stable weather, clearer skies, and milder temperatures—making the experience far more comfortable as you stand beneath the Arctic heavens waiting for nature’s greatest light show.

What this Conference is about

What it means to be a nurse today is not what it was five years ago, and it will not be the same five years from now.

This conference is built for that reality.

Set against one of the most striking journeys in the world, sailing from Hamburg through the Norwegian coastline and into the Arctic Circle, this is an opportunity to step out of the day-to-day and take a clear, honest look at where the profession is heading and what that means for your practice.

The program focuses on the issues nurses are dealing with not the polished version, but the real one. Workforce pressures are no longer background noise. They are shaping care delivery, influencing decision-making, and determining who stays in the profession and who leaves. Sessions will explore the realities of workload, moral distress, and retention, alongside practical discussions on leadership at the bedside and the evolving nature of nursing work.

At the same time, scope of practice is expanding in ways that are changing professional frontiers. Nurse prescribing, advanced practice roles, and working at top of scope are no longer future concepts. They are happening now, raising important questions about capability, accountability, and collaboration across disciplines.

Technology is also redefining care. Digital health, artificial intelligence, virtual care models, and remote monitoring are already embedded in many settings. This is not about whether these changes are coming, but how they are being used, where the risks sit, and what nurses need to understand to use them safely and effectively in practice.

Overlaying all of this is increasing patient complexity. Multi-morbidity across all age groups, the intersection of mental and physical health, and the ongoing impact of chronic disease are challenging traditional models of care. Nurses are managing more, with less, in systems that are still trying to catch up.

Beyond the clinical environment, broader forces are shaping health outcomes in ways that cannot be ignored. Social determinants of health, environmental change, resource allocation, and access to care are directly influencing who becomes unwell, how they present, and what care is possible. For Australian nurses, this includes the ongoing challenges of rural and remote practice and the persistent inequities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Professional identity is also under pressure. Workplace culture, incivility, and the realities of maintaining boundaries in both physical and digital environments are part of everyday practice. This conference creates space for these conversations to be had in a way that is practical, grounded, and relevant.

This is not a conference built on idealised versions of nursing. It is built on the real work, the real challenges, and the real opportunities that sit in front of the profession right now.  Combined with the experience of travelling through some of the most extraordinary landscapes in the world, this is a chance to step back, think clearly, and return to practice with a sharper understanding of what is changing and how to navigate it.

CPD Relevance

Attendance at Navigating the Future of Nursing: Practice in a Changing World supports ongoing professional development by strengthening the knowledge, skills, and professional judgement required for contemporary nursing practice.

The conference addresses key issues currently influencing healthcare delivery, including workforce pressures, expanding scope of practice, increasing patient complexity, digital health, and the broader social and environmental determinants of health. These areas are directly relevant to the provision of safe, person-centred, and evidence-informed care.

Participation in this conference supports nurses to:

  • Maintain and develop current knowledge relevant to their context of practice, consistent with Standard 1: Thinks critically and analyses nursing practice
  • Apply evidence and emerging models of care, including digital health and advanced practice roles, in line with Standard 6: Provides safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice
  • Engage in reflective practice and consider the impact of professional behaviour, workplace culture, and leadership on care delivery, aligning with Standard 2: Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships
  • Understand and respond to factors influencing health outcomes, including social, cultural, and environmental determinants, supporting Standard 3: Maintains the capability for practice and Standard 4: Comprehensively conducts assessments

The conference also aligns with the NMBA Code of Conduct for Nurses, particularly in relation to:

  • Practising safely, effectively, and collaboratively within evolving healthcare systems
  • Promoting health equity and culturally safe care
  • Maintaining professional integrity, accountability, and lifelong learning

Engagement in this conference contributes to a nurse’s responsibility to undertake continuing professional development that is relevant to their practice, enhances clinical capability, and supports the delivery of safe and effective care.

Call for abstracts

We invite nurses and healthcare professionals to submit abstracts for presentation at this unique conference. This conference is focused on the realities of modern nursing practice. We are seeking presentations that reflect current challenges, emerging trends, and practical insights relevant to nurses working across all clinical settings.

Submissions should move beyond theory and demonstrate clear relevance to practice. We are particularly interested in abstracts that address real-world experience, evidence-informed approaches, and innovations that are already influencing care delivery.

Who Should Submit

  • Registered nurses across all clinical areas
  • Nurse practitioners and advanced practice nurses
  • Nurse educators and researchers
  • Interdisciplinary professionals working closely with nursing teams

Why Present at This Conference

This is an opportunity to contribute to a program that reflects the real work of nursing and influence care delivery as a presenter, in a setting that allows time for both professional engagement and reflection.

Presenters will be part of a conference that brings together experienced clinicians to explore the future of nursing practice, while travelling through one of the most remarkable regions in the world.

Presenters will receive $200 off the conference registration fee for each one hour presentation and $100 off the registration fee for each 30-minute presentation.

Please Note: Conference registration does not include accommodation or travel costs.

How Do I dress on a cruise?

Most cruise lines offer a casual atmosphere onboard. Casual attire is the norm during the day, and there is no formal dress code at night. However, many passengers choose to change into something slightly less casual for dinner.

At least once per sailing, during which passengers are encouraged to dress up. While you rarely see tuxedos or evening gowns, suits and cocktail dresses are quite common.

Additionally, ships usually host several themed nights, such as White Parties, ’70s, or ’80s Night, Hawaiian or even Mexican during each sailing. It’s a good idea to bring along a few themed items.

NB: Closer to your sail date you will be able to see what the exact theme nights are being held via your cruise companies app.
