The impact of trauma on people’s lives is all over social media at the present moment.
In this conference, you will learn about trauma and violence-informed care that has been gaining prominence since the 1990s as a framework for working with and relating to people who have experienced negative consequences after exposure to dangerous experiences.
Such experiences include and are not limited to child adverse experiences (CAE), accidents, war, displacement, incarceration, domestic violence, workplace bullying, and, for some, living through life-threatening illness and psychotic episodes.
In each session, you will explore and discuss content that will assist you in dealing with and managing the anxiety, fear, anger and shame of patients you find yourself providing care to.
You will get to experience several models of care, which, when explained, “make sense of” your interactions with other people – patients and colleagues! The presenters will demonstrate different “easy to integrate” interventions you can use wherever you nurse.
Your presenters, Wendy & Colleen, have over 60 years of experience working in mental health and providing care to individuals who have experienced a broad range of trauma and violence. They integrate compassion, respect, reflection and stories into their presentations.
Patients have an increasing expectation that healthcare professionals will be trauma-informed. How informed are you?
In this conference you will:
Not your typical Nursing CPD Conference
In 1974 Colleen thought she would become a nurse for a little while. Forty-five years later she finds herself working in Nursing education.
During those years she became increasingly drawn back to psychiatry, working with people who were experiencing life very differently and who were at risk of ever-increasing marginalisation.
For many years she had the privilege and challenge of working especially with people diagnosed with personality disorders and trauma-induced conditions. She maintains a lasting appreciation and respect for their journey and their resilience.
Colleen has worked in Public and Private Hospitals, Community settings, and Nursing Education.
Colleen completed her Psychiatric training first, then her General and Obstetric training in the last cohort of hospital-trained nurses in Auckland. She has a BA Humanities and a Grad Certificate in Adult Education.
Wendy has over 30 years as a health professional (clinical, education and research), twenty-five of those years in mental health. Areas of specific interest and passion for Wendy include professional supervision, professional boundaries, professional identity, links between childhood trauma and mental illness and workplace bullying.
The Conference is delivered in two formats in the spirit of adult learning. The live presentations are delivered in the Conference Room, and the online library is open one month before the actual Conference dates. The library is an essential component of the entire Conference program.
The library consists of Conference material supplied by the Presenter/s, which can include any of the following:
The research documents and recorded Conference presentations form part of the Continuing Professional Development activities. They are delivered to you before the commencement date so you can start your Conference Program early. If you choose not to undertake these activities prior, there is a two-week window post the Conference where the library remains open to you. You can also undertake the library activities during the actual Conference.
Below is a snapshot of the Conference Program – full conference program still to be finalised.

Well presented information (Wendy and Colleen), some new, some consolidating old knowledge. Had a great group which mostly gelled together both socially and with course content.
The CPD sessions were informative and based on evidence-based practice, research, and the expertise of the presenters (Wendy and Colleen) who were engaging and committed to sharing their stories while challenging the participants to reflect upon their own practice.
Wonderful to hear of Wendy’s experiences preceding mine by about 20 years. She gives incredible insights and makes a way moving forward to continue to ensure the best outcomes for our most vulnerable citizens here in Australia
