What is this event about
Approximately 20% of Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Completing a MHFA Course will help you to develop the skills to support a client, friend, family member, or co-worker.
Having mental health first aid skills means that you can assist someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference to your community and in your workplace.
Learn how to assist adults who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.
Many people feel uncomfortable and unprepared when thinking about starting a mental health conversation with someone they are concerned about. Understanding how to talk about mental health and having the confidence and knowledge to help someone in need are important skills that any person in the community can learn.
Mental Health in the workplace is a growing concern. This course will assist employers to create a workplace where mental health is identified as of key importance and where there are trained personnel available to staff to identify concerns and address issues before they escalate.

In completing this course attendees can become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider. Complete an online assessment after the course to become accredited.
“Sue was welcoming and engaging and I felt there was a freedom for discussion by the group which doesn’t always occur and many members felt comfortable to share personal experiences”

Our Presenter:
Sue Walker
RN, BN, BN (ADMIN), MPHC, MACN
Sue Walker is accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia as a Mental Health First Aid Trainer and has delivered Mental Health First Aid training courses throughout Australia to both large and small organisations.
Sue holds Degrees in both Nursing and Health Administration, a Master’s Degree in Public Health, as well as a number of certificate courses in Psychiatry of Ageing, Gerontology, and Training and Assessment.
Sue is passionate about making a difference in how the community experience the healthcare system. One in 5 of us will develop a common mental health condition in any one year, but not all of those needing to access mental health support will do so.
The aim of Mental Health First Aid Training is to educate people on the signs and symptoms of a person developing a common mental health condition or a worsening of a mental health condition that may be developing into a crisis.
With this knowledge people can learn how to approach a person, and how to assist and support the person until they can get them to a mental health professional.
“Mental Health First Aid Australia is a global, purpose-driven provider of mental health first aid education that equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide support when it matters most.”
“Sue engaged all participants in the course, provided anecdotes to aid in understanding, and shared much personal experience. Sue demonstrated concepts and provided plenty of examples. Sue was a wonderful trainer :)”
