Conference Synopsis

This two-day seminar introduces you to the main mental illnesses that you are likely to see as a nurse working in clinical practice across health settings. During the two days, a number of interventions will be demonstrated that can be easily integrated into your practice.

One in four adults will experience a mental illness at some time in their life. The common mental health conditions that will be covered are anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychosis, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The seminar will also cover suicidality and self-harm.

Conference Learning Outcomes

In this seminar you will:

    • Gain an understanding of the common mental health conditions

    • Understand the reasons for suicidality and self harm

    • Investigate how to engage with an individual in distress

    • Identify when, where, and how of referral to appropriate mental health services

  • Ways in which the history and stigma of mental illness have influenced current understanding and approaches to individuals who have a mental illness
  • Who tells us we have a mental illness and why do we believe them
  • The main mental illness categories that individuals may present with to your service
  • The signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions
  • Explore the current available treatments – medication, TMS, CBT, ECT, the talking therapies, acceptance and commitment therapy
  • Who makes up the mental health multidisciplinary team
  • The different treatment services available outside of hospital
  • The NDIS and their role in mental health support services
  • Identify strategies to settle patients who are distressed, anxious, and fearful
  • How to avoid over or under involvement with people who have a mental illness
  • Understand the role of unconscious dynamics that can influence the Nurse-patient relationship

  • The limbic system designed to keep us all alive
  • Non suicidal self injury (NSSI)
  • How to talk with someone about suicide

Wendy has over 30 years as a health professional (clinical, education and research), twenty-five of those years in mental health. Areas of specific interest and passion for Wendy include professional supervision, professional boundaries, professional identity, links between childhood trauma and mental illness and workplace bullying.

Specialist Nurse Educator

Sue Walker is a Director and co-founder of the Nurses for Nurses Network and the Nursing CPD Institute. As a Registered Nurse Sue holds Degrees in Nursing and Health Administration, a Master’s Degree in Primary Health Care majoring in Palliative Care, as well as a number of certificate courses in Psychiatry of Ageing, Gerontology, Chemotherapy Administration, Training and Assessment, and is also an Accredited Mental Health First Aid Trainer.
