This immersive nursing study tour explores the complex landscape of women’s health through a cross-cultural lens, focusing on the unique challenges and triumphs experienced by women in Cambodia. Over the course of the tour, participants will engage in site visits, community discussions, and comparative analysis of health systems and practices between Cambodia, Australia, and global standards.
From maternal health to mental well-being, gender-based violence to cancer prevention, participants will critically examine how social determinants, cultural beliefs, infrastructure, and policy shape the health outcomes of women in diverse settings. By connecting with local healthcare workers, NGOs, and communities, Australian nurses will deepen their understanding of global health disparities and their own role in advocacy, equity, and culturally safe care.
Women make up over 50% of the world’s population and have specific issues that impact their health and well-being. This is a conference for all nurses and midwives, irrespective of their practice area.
On this study tour, participants will:

Jean-Michel Filippi is a professor of Khmer studies at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. He holds a Ph.D. in linguistics and master’s degrees in anthropology and mathematics. He specialises in the description of the Khmer language and various minority languages of Cambodia and Southeast Asia. He is currently in charge of a UNESCO program about minority languages and cultures in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains.
Jean-Michel has published several articles and books about these topics, mainly in French and Khmer, but also in English, including “Everyday Khmer” and the soon to be published “Preliminary Researches About Cambodian Minority Languages” Apart from linguistics, he has always had a great interest in Cambodian history and art. His wealth of knowledge on Cambodia makes him a fascinating speaker on a diverse range of topics.
Mark Dainty is the founder of the Snakebite Relief Program, a Cambodian initiative focused on improving snakebite awareness, prevention, and emergency response in vulnerable communities.
Based in Siem Reap, Mark combines more than two decades of experience working with wildlife and venomous snakes with a strong commitment to public health education and community outreach. Originally from the United Kingdom, Mark began working professionally with wildlife in 2002 across several zoological institutions before relocating to Cambodia in 2018 to support conservation and biodiversity programs. He is currently the Senior Animal Curator at Angkor Wildlife and Aquarium, where his work includes wildlife conservation, animal care, and public education.
Throughout his career, Mark has specialised in venomous snakes from Southeast Asia and Africa, with extensive experience handling vipers, cobras, and other medically significant species. His work has included research, snake rescue, public education, and the safe management of dangerous wildlife in both rural and urban environments.
In 2017, Mark survived a life-threatening King Cobra bite sustained while assisting with venom research. The incident resulted in a week in intensive care and the amputation of his right index finger. The experience profoundly changed his perspective, highlighting not only the medical impact of snakebite, but also the long-term physical, emotional, and financial consequences faced by victims and their families.
After arriving in Cambodia, Mark became increasingly aware of the significant burden snakebite places on rural communities, particularly where access to education, emergency care, and treatment can be limited. Witnessing these challenges firsthand inspired him to establish the Snakebite Relief Program in 2023.
Today, Mark works closely with local communities, schools, healthcare workers, and organisations across Cambodia to improve snakebite prevention and emergency response knowledge. His work focuses on practical education, community empowerment, and reducing the devastating health impacts of snakebite through awareness, training, and collaboration.

Angkor Thom, the ancient royal capital of the Khmer Empire. At its heart lies the remarkable Bayon temple, adorned with enigmatic faces that come into view upon closer inspection.
Our exploration continues to the Terrace of the Elephants, a platform from which the King once greeted his victorious armies, and the Terrace of the Leper King, adorned with intricate carvings along a narrow passage that leads to the Baphuon complex.
Our next stop is the picturesque Ta Prohm, a temple renowned for its beauty. The structure is adorned with the sprawling roots of fig trees, creating a haunting and exotic ambiance. Over the centuries, these majestic roots have intertwined with the temple’s massive stone blocks, evoking a sense of a forgotten city.
Following our exploration, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant near the serene Srah Srang lake before proceeding to Angkor Wat. In the afternoon, we’ll have the opportunity to visit the most renowned temple in the Angkor complex: Angkor Wat itself.
The five towers of Angkor Wat symbolize the peaks of Mount Meru, while the encompassing walls mirror the mountains that mark the edge of the world. Encircled by a moat, the temple’s design also symbolizes the vast ocean beyond.
Evening: Optional Fund Raising Trivia

Sessions included today:
Evening: Optional Non-Group Dinner Tour to the Phare Circus (additional cost)
More than just a circus, Phare performers use theatre, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories: historical, folk and modern. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent, making Phare Circus the top-rated modern cultural performance in Siem Reap.
Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak’s vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by nine young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher who used drawing classes as therapy, and they wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived, and troubled youngsters in Battambang.
They founded an art school and a public school to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next, and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today, more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily, and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs that try to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales.
Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.

Sue has a fantastic presentation style, using language that we could all understand and also using real-world scenarios to underpin the concepts being taught.

The conference topics were very relevant and interesting. The presenter, Sue who was running the sessions was awesome. She was professional and interesting to listen too involving the audience. It was great to mix pleasure with learning and not to feel the pressure of attending a conference.

Sue was very confident, knowledgable, approachable and engaging. It was empowering to be able to glean relevant information to go on and feel confident in assisting mental health sufferers.

I always enjoy Sue Walkers presentations. She is very fabulous at including everyone. I always enjoy Nursing CPD presentations. I’ve been attending since 2011 and have never been disappointed. I look forward to my next adventure in learning and travelling.
