Learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in crisis situations.

Many people feel uncomfortable and unprepared when thinking about starting a mental health conversation with someone they are concerned about. Understanding how to talk about mental health and having the confidence and knowledge to help someone in need are important skills that any person in the community can learn.

In completing this course attendees can become an Accredited Youth Mental Health First Aider. Complete an online assessment after the course to become accredited.

Synopsis:

Approximately 20% of Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Completing a MHFA Course will help you to develop the skills to support a client, friend, family member, or co-worker.

Having mental health first aid skills means that you can assist someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference to your community and in your workplace.

Who is this conference for?

The 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is for adults who work, live or care for adolescents, such as school staff, parents, sports coaches, community group leaders and youth workers. The course is not appropriate for adolescents to attend.

You will learn how to assist an adolescent who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

“Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system and work in difficult environments that can take advantage of their commitment to ensuring the best possible care is delivered. To continue to meet professional and community expectations Nurses and Midwives need to acknowledge their unique contribution to health care delivery and assert their collective strength to safeguard the community and ensure their ongoing professional needs are recognised and met.

Healthcare should be delivered by competent, knowledgeable individuals to ensure the best possible experience for the recipient of that care. Nursing is a fabulous profession.  The knowledge and skill of the individual Nurse will have the greatest influence on the happiness and health outcomes of each and every client”.

Sue’s calm and professional style helped to keep information clear and succinct, regardless of the question/s asked of her. She demonstrated excellent knowledge of the course content and had examples to share which helped to embed the concepts. She also repeated key concepts at every chapter point so we as MHFA people are able to execute in our roles as required.
